Emergence (0), 2021
An early iteration of Emergence.
Bioplastics, mountain sand, projections, sound.
16 sqm full room installation.
Emergence is a body of work spanning multiple projects. It is an evolving investigation into concepts and experiences of ‘Nature’, ecological demise, and the transformative, mystical dimensions of the encounter between ‘human’ and ‘nature’. The work examines this encounter as a hybrid site, holding potential for both spiritual expansiveness, and sinister implication; both intimate connection, and violent separation/ fracture.
The project takes the form of sculptural installations in which bio-plastics are used to explore the flux and tension between natural and synthetic, living and dead, real and imaginary. It shows the body at the locus of an endangered natural world, a digitally-mediated reality and systemic violence. The formal and material liminality of the objects suggests a continuum and a multitude which unravel in between such presumed binaries.
The work dwells in ecological grief while asking: what is it exactly that we are grieving?
